Your Own, Unique, Creative Expression
Every guitarist has a unique voice waiting to be discovered, and songwriting is one of the most rewarding ways to discover & express it. The beauty of songwriting is that it doesn't have to be complex - sometimes the simplest ideas can carry the most meaning.
Try starting with simple chords like - C, G, Am, and F - and then make them your own.
This could be as simple as experimenting with the order, the strumming pattern, the dynamics. Fingerpicking, instead of strumming.
Think about the songs you love. They’ve influenced your playing, often in ways you might not even notice. Your favourite song - take its chord structure and reverse it. Take their strumming pattern and apply it to your own chord progression.
Without sounding too cheesy.. let your ears and feelings guide you. Try to shut off from the analysis. Just play what feels good to you.
The smallest change can spark a new idea, and that idea might evolve into something that becomes a genuine creative expression of how you think & feel.
Songwriting is about exploration—there’s no “wrong” way to do it.
Have no fear of judgment. Place no large expectation on yourself.
Just enjoy the process of exploring the guitar and the potential you have with it.
And record it! You learn so much by listening back to yourself. It enables a different perspective. You’ll be amazed how often you can feel something isn’t working in the moment - but, you press record, play it back - and you hear your playing and creativity, in a whole new light. It’s a great learning curve. And can be a great confidence booster.
Let me know how you get on.
