Hey guitar players,
How are you all?
Since launching my free beginner guitar course, it got me thinking a lot about my own journey with the guitar. And what helped inspire me to continue progressing and pushing myself.
Here are some brief points that stick with me to this day.

😬 The Comfort Zone
It’s okay to feel out of your depth sometimes. I try to turn this feeling in to a positive. If we get too comfortable, the chances are, we aren’t pushing ourselves.
Seek out those riffs, chord shapes and finger exercises, that at first, seem like a stretch too far. But, have the belief that regular practice, patience & perseverance will bring all the rewards. And man.. that feeling when it clicks in to place, is 100% worth the journey.
🎶 Creative Expression
I believe everyone has unique creative expression. And you should discover and express yours as soon as possible.
Even with just a few guitar chords in your locker, you’re able to start composing your own music.
You’ve mastered a progression of 3 or 4 chords. Now change the order. Reverse them. Apply a different strumming pattern. Fingerpick instead of strum. You are now composing your own music.
Creativity doesn’t have to be complicated.
Sometimes, the subtlest change, can create the best results.
❤️ Learn What You Love
From day 1 of a students learning journey, I believe you can find something to teach them, from the music they enjoy most. Don’t be put off by the complicated chord progressions, or speedy solos, that occur in your favourite track.
Maybe the bass line is more accessible. The keyboard line, could be transposed to the guitar. The vocal melody, can be turned in to a lovely guitar lick. Usually, you can find something, that can be translated to the guitar, at a beginner level.
By learning this way, you are able to balance out the inevitable (and essential) theory, finger exercises etc, that are all part of your development.
You then undertake all of this, safe in the knowledge, that jamming along to your favourite tune, is just around the corner.
🌍 Diversify
Seek music from every corner of the world. Start with the previous point of learning what you love. But don’t be scared to venture a lot further, whenever possible.
Learning music from a mix of styles, moods and creative practices, does wonders for your musical ability. Plus, the feeling of discovering something new, that you then fall in love with, never gets old.
(I don’t know how I missed it.. but I only just discovered this Fun Boy Three tune. It has become a proper earworm over the last week!)
